It was a bit of a rainy Adelaide day, but we thought wed take a chance and sit outside on Rundle Street out the front of the Austral. We arrived just after 12pm and the place was pretty much empty. I think that’s just the way things go in Adelaide…. Raining or cold, theres no one around, sunny or hot and you can’t find a seat. Anyway just as we headed in to the bar to order 4 other people beat us to it. Suddenly it was rush hour and the one Austral staff member behind the bar was under pressure. surely Austral management is smart enough to put on more than one bar staff for Friday lunches? After about 10 minutes we were all sorted out. I went for the Beef Burger for $13.90. The deal at the Austral is if you get a burger you can have a schooner of Heineken for a $1 more. The beer at the Austral has always been good and today was no different. Our meals arrived about 15 minutes or so later and by then I was onto my second beer. I definitely think they should upgrade the schooner to a pint. The chips were pre-salted and for something new pre-peppered. The chips also had a slight fishy tang to them as in the oil they were cooked in had seen a lot of action. But the chips were still hot, crisp and enjoyable. On to the main event. The Burger was a pretty standard affair. Bacon, egg, tomato, cheese, meat, sauce and a heap of lettuce on a sesame seed bun. The bacon was a bit fatty and undercooked for me. The patty itself was smallish but thick and had some herbs and personality about it. By the end the roll had become very mushy and it was hard to hold together. There's really not all that much I can say about this burger. It wasn’t by any means bad, but it wasn’t anything to rave about either. Just a decent pub burger. One of my accomplice’s who was heading off on a vegan health retreat decided upon the dips with the bowl of olives. He enjoyed these as much as he could as everyone around him downed their burgers and beers. Overall the Austral has always been and still is a great place to come for a beer and atmosphere amongst the popular and Busy Rundle street. And if you get hungry while your there, the food will keep you satisfied.
